   Contemporary Approach to the Bible

The study group meets Wednesdays at 10:30 AM in the parish hall. Contemporary critical scholarship provides new insights into biblical interpretation. The group explores this information in readings and discussion.

At the moment, the group is reading and discussing The Five Gospels, which reports the work of the Jesus Seminar in its attempt to determine what Jesus actually said. This group of renowned New Testament scholars has made an extensive study of the four synoptic gospels and the Gospel of Thomas and established objective criteria for identifying what quotations were words actually spoken by Jesus. Their findings will amaze you and will help you answer such questions as "What was Jesus really like as a person?" and "How much of the gospels are the words of early Church members trying to strengthen their community?"

Classes are open to all and participants may attend any or all sessions on a regular or drop-in basis. There are no class fees, but participants buy their own literature. For questions, call the church office at (925) 284-7420.
